The picturesque village is built in an inspiring location only 47km (30miles) from the town of Volos in an altitude of 220m (720 feet). It is the largest village of Pelion and show considerable growth both commercially and culturally during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Zagora played a key education and cultural role for the whole area of Pelion since the early 18th century. Its first school was hosted in the Monastery of Sotiros. As the village was expending the need for a greater school presented its self. Thus in 1702 (or 1712) in the fields of St. Giannis Prodromos a new school was built. With the help of Patriarch Kallinikos 3rd and the foreign merchant Gianni Prigou it was renovated and became a higher learning institute known as the “Zagora’s GreekMuseum”. Its library has over 18000 books and it became the school to many of Greece’s scholarly fathers like Rigas Feraios.
Testimony to the village’s golden era give the family mentions of Kassaveti, Prigou and of the poet Petros Magnis all built during the 17th and 18th centuries. Many churches are scattered around the village but the one that stands out the most is the byzantine basilica church of St. George built in 1765. Its wooden sculptures and golden frames are truly works of art. Craftsmen from Epirus created the basilicas of Agias Paraskevis and Agias Kyriakis (18th century). Of high interest are the marble fountains of Despoti and Krali, the covered fountain of Sevastous and finally the fountain of Nirades Nimfes in the square of St. George.
We could speak with our own words about our hospitality in Haravgi and the magical view from our rooms. However, we left it to our guests to do so! Below are their comments:
First time we visited Zagora was Christmas of 2001. We arrived at night coming from the south and felt quite tired from the long drive. The next morning however, the view of the village was exhilarating. Haravgi hotel felt like our home with its warm people and a warm atmosphere. What satisfied us particularly was the cleanness of the rooms something I am very cautious about. Thank you a lot! We really hope to visit again soon! Fani-R.Laonardos, Syros.
I loved the hotel because it has beautiful rooms, beautifully decorated and a beautiful view... Evi Livaditou, Salonica 10 years old.
