Historical information about the city that will recive you
The city of Savona, developed in the Byzantine period, was Genoa’s rival in the Middle Age in the field of commerce. In 1327 she was granted, by Ludovico the Bavarian, the right to mint money and in the second half of the 1400 the Della Rovere family gave Christiany two Popes, Sisto IV and Giulio II, who favored a period of great renaissance in the arts, culture and economic life of the city.
Following the prosperity of the economy the city was enriched with the construction of numerous churches and nobiliary palaces with beautiful slate portals and massive turrets, all linked by a maze of narrow streets tipical of the Ligurian architecture of that time.
In this period, when he was still a child, Christopher Colombus and his family moved into the city.
In the first half of 1500 Savona was ruled by Genoa, that distroyed important quarters and built the imponent Fortress of the Priamar, a symbol of the power of the winner over the defeated where in 1830-31 Giuseppe Mazzini was held prisoner.
Savona had to wait until the XVII century to raise to fame again with the production of the “Ceramiche Blu”, the Blue Ceramics. This fame continued with the Liberty architecture, exploded in the last twenty years of 1800 and run out with the first world war.
The old part of the city, gathered around the port, is flanked by the more modern part with wide and straight streets and tree-lined squares inspired by the same town planning theory applied in Turin.
This city that between the end of ‘800 and even more in the ‘900 had became an important industrial centre today is a lively touristic crossroad that awaits his guest with bars, discos, restaurants …and soon it will take shape around that tehnological jewel, the Cruise Terminal, a new quarter designed by a great catalan architect, Ricardo Bofill.
Already now american and german tourists alight from the big cruise ships of Costa Crociere that has decide to build right here its base for the third millenium.
