Fuszhizome-an Machiya Residence Inn
The townhouse can accommodate up to 4 people, making it perfect for couples, families, and trips with a small group or friends.
The roof and latticed bay windows are the first images to catch the eye. The koshido or latticed door opens to unveil the miseniwa or entrance way, which leads to the hashiriniwa or long external hallway. The earthen floors that line the hallway connects the front entrance with the old Japanese style kitchen. The rooms of the machiya are divided into three areas- the misenoma, nakanoma, and okunoma. These rooms lead to the tsuboniwa or Japanese garden. Although compact in size, all of the attributes of a Kyoto machiya have been meticulously restored to make you feel as though you stepped back in time.
In the olden times, the misenoma was the area of the house, where guests were officially greeted.
During those days, the machiya acted as both a workplace and home. This room was used for business transactions, hence the word mise means “store.”
The wooden doors of the misenoma entranceway open to reveal the traditional Japanese ajiro or wickerwork ceiling, and Japanese alcove. Here you can enjoy the interplay of shadow and light from the world beyond the lattice door.
