South of Miami begins a 110 Mile long chain of 34 islands, connected by 42 bridges to the mainland along the 1938 completed Overseas Highway (US 1). The "Florida Keys", a colorful mix of flowering jungles, sandy beaches and coral reefs stretch deep towards the Caribbean - the Atlantic on the left, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico on the right. Key Largo is the largest of the Keys and the one closest to Miami, known as the 'Dive Capital of the USA'. The middle Keys, from Long Key Channel through Marathon to the Seven Mile Bridge, are still dominated by fishing. The lower Keys end in the popular resort island Key West, put on the world map by Ernest Hemingway and today grown into a lively vacation center world reknown for scuba diving and snorkeling.
