Patmos Island :
When Patmos was under Roman Occupation, the inhabitats abandoned the island and Patmos became a place of exile. In 95AD Jesus'pupil Jonh Theologos was exiled in Patmos by the Emperor Dominianos. In the cave ,where he was kept, he listened to God's voice and he wrote the Apokalypse [ Divine Revelation ]. This is the famous cave of Apokalypse that people from all over the world visit every year.
During the 11th century, the monk Christodoulos built the Monastery in Saint John Theologos' honour. During the 13th century, they gave permission to the people to build houses near the Monastery, so that they could be protected from the pirates'attacks.
During the 16th century, the island of Patmos started to develop and flourish.
In 1713, the college of Patmos was established and in 1821 Patmos participated in the Greek Revolution with ships and navy. After the Turkish Occupation, Patmos was under Italian Occupation in 1912 and finally in 1947 the Greek flag was raised in Dodekanese.
