We're proud of our surroundings for a very good reason. Situated in the most rural village of Madeira and also the most southwest point of the island, this is an area of outstanding natural beauty where human footprints respects nature and ancestral traditions linger thoughout the time.
Our location is convenient as well as beautiful. Only 4 kms away from Ponta do Pargo LIghthouse (open to public from monday to friday for free), 7 kms from the small village of Achadas da Cruz where you can get down to the beach by cablecar, 25 minutes from the famous Porto Moniz Village and its stunning natural pools. it's easy to get to us and once you're here we're ideally placed to explore the local area.
Levadas and walking tours:
Levada dos Moinhos - very beautiful path in the middle of centenarian heathers, its name is due to the fact that there were several water mills along its route, and the ruins of three of them can still be seen (Achadas Mill, Cancelas Mill and Levada Grande Mill).Starting on the road to Porto Moniz (5 Km from our cottages and 500 meters away from 'Porto Moniz street sign and ending at the intersection of Santa with Paul da Serra (Cattle Fair) or vice versa (3-4 hours);
Levada da Central da Calheta that can be initiated about 200 meters behind Restaurant "A Carreta" and finished at Ponta do Pargo (5 hours if you choose to walk back to the cottage);
From the cottages, follow the way to Capela do Cabo (Cape Chapel) and further trough the old road to the center of Ponta do Pargo with a possible visit to the lighthouse (built in 1922 and 312 m above sea level) (5 hours).
Rabaçal / 25 Fontes in Paul da Serra - 3 hour round trip;
Levada da Ribeira da Janela starting in Lamaceiros (Santa) - with10 tunnels until its source - ( its about a 3 hour round trip to the first tunnel);
Caminho do Galhano starting in Fonte do Bispo with connection to Ribeira da Janela. (Leave the car in Lamaceiros and reach Fonte do Bispo by taxi) - about 8 hours.
For the small ones:
If you are traveling with children or should you prefer something different, visit Quinta Pedagógica dos Prazeres where you can spend some time among the animals and also taste some local products, including, jams, teas and cider. Porto Moniz Aquarium - From Monday to Sunday you can see how Madeira´s ocean life looks like.
Sports:
Ponta do Pargo its a great place to practice different sports. Ciclying, downhill, surf or jeep and quad biking off-road trails are some of them.
Festivities:
Ponta do Pargo has plenty of unique ancestral traditions, specially religious festivals like Missas do parto (near Christmas) Saint Anthony Festival with a unique tray procession, Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte Fest, etc...The majority of these fests are in summer.
Also, every year in September, the famous Pêro Festival take place and its a great oportunity to taste organic local products.
