European capital and home to several European institutions, Strasbourg is a city on the French/German border, steeped in its dual culture and boasting an impressive architectural heritage. The whole of the historic city centre, the Grande Île, and most notably its famous gothic cathedral, Notre Dame de Strasbourg, and the Petite France district, are now listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Strasbourg is the economic, university, and research capital of North-East France and prides itself on being a major cultural centre, with several national institutions (National Opera of the Rhine, Strasbourg National Theatre, the Centre for Music and Dance, the André Malraux Media Library, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art). The city has many treats in store for its visitors, who will delight in discovering its history, way of life, culinary traditions and, of course, its Christmas Market.
Bridges067 is pleased to offer holidaymakers or business travellers two short-term furnished lets, available for nightly or weekly bookings. The first, a loft apartment, sleeps up to 4 people in the Krutenau district, whereas the second consists of three double guest rooms in the spacious “Little Indonesia” duplex apartment in the Neudorf district, with access to a communal ground-floor swimming pool and secure private parking.
The Krutenau
The Krutenau is one of the oldest districts of Strasbourg, only a 10-minute walk from the city centre, 15 minutes on foot from the European Parliament and Council of Europe, and on direct tram lines to all of these destinations, as well as the main train station. Formerly marshland with a dense network of waterways, the quarter was known for a long time as Krutenau in undis (of the waves), hence some of the place names currently still in use, such as the Place Saint Nicolas aux Ondes. Over the years the district developed as a market-gardening area, before becoming the site for military barracks in the 18th Century and tobacco factories in the 19th Century. Following urban renewal in the 1970s, students then gradually took the place of the district’s working class residents, and today the Krutenau is one of the highspots of Strasbourg nightlife, with its many restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
The Place Saint Nicolas aux Ondes has recently been turned into a little park complete with park benches, and the street around the square has been pedestrianised. With its numerous cafés, bars and restaurants, the square is a lively place, popular in the summer months with pétanque players. The district generally is bustling with local shops. The art nouveau municipal swimming baths, the National School of Decorative Arts, also art nouveau, and the Strasbourg Youth Theatre are all to be found within about 100 metres of the square.
